Robin Gibb wakes from coma

Robin Gibb 3

Bee Gees singer Robin Gibb has regained consciousness and is talking to family after slipping into a coma just over a week ago, Reuters reports.

The improvement in his condition stunned his doctor, who had advised his wife and children three days ago to expect the worst. The 62-year-old Bee Gees co-founder is being treated for advanced bowel cancer, pneumonia and liver failure.

"We felt it was very likely that Robin would succumb to what seemed to be insurmountable obstacles to any form of meaningful recovery. As a team, we were all concerned that we might be approaching the realms of futility," Dr Andrew Thillainayagam, of Imperial College Healthcare, said in a statement released by Gibb's spokesman.

"It is testament to Robin's extraordinary courage, iron will and deep reserves of physical strength that he has overcome quite incredible odds to get where he is now."

Gibb's family has been at his bedside every day, talking to him and playing his favourite music, the doctor added.
