Against Me! singer comes out as transgendered

Against Me! singer Tom Gabel has revealed that she plans to begin living as a woman. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the Florida punk rocker said she'll take the name Laura Jane Grace and begin the transition process by taking hormones and undergoing electrolysis treatments.

Gabel, who's dealt privately with gender dysphoria for years, said the hardest part was coming out to her wife Heather. "For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news," said Gabel. "But she's been super-amazing and understanding."

Gabel decided to speak out shortly after informing family and close friends. "I'm going to have embarrassing moments," she said, "and that won't be fun. But that's part of what talking to you is about -- is hoping people will understand, and hoping they'll be fairly kind."

Pitchfork points out that there have been hints of Gabel's transition in Against Me!'s music. The band recently performed a new song called "Transgender Dysphoria Blues" and the song "The Ocean" contains the lyrics, "And if I could have chosen/ I would have been born a woman/ My mother once told me she would have named me Laura/ I'd grow up to be strong and beautiful like her."
