Drake, Feist make Polaris Prize long list
Drake, Feist, Leonard Cohen and The Weeknd are among the Canadian acts to be long-listed for the 2012 Polaris Music Prize. The list of 40 nominees for the seventh annual musical prize, which comes with $30,000 and the distinction of best Canadian album of the year, was unveiled in Vancouver on Thursday (June 14).
The albums are selected based on artistic merit, without consideration of record sales. Previous winners include Arcade Fire, Karkwa, F***ed Up, Patrick Watson, Caribou and Final Fantasy.
In a month, the long list will be cut down to a short list of 10 finalists after a round of voting. A jury of critics will then choose a winner at a ceremony on September 24.
"The year’s list deliciously illustrates the burgeoning sense of community in our jury," said Steve Jordan, the prize's founder and executive director. "Almost half of the selections on this list were the direct result of passionate recommendations made by individual members to their peers. We hope the ultimate result of this dialogue will likewise inform the taste of adventurous music lovers from Canada and the world."
