Lauryn Hill charged with tax evasion

Federal prosecutors in the United States have accused rapper Lauryn Hill for failing to file income tax over a period of three years.

The Associated Press reports that the 37-year-old South Orange, New Jersey resident earned more than $1.6 million from owning four corporations, touring and recording and film industry royalties in 2005, 2006 and 2007 but allegedly did not file a tax return. She is scheduled to appear before a federal magistrate in Newark on June 29.

A former member of the rap trio The Fugees, Hill released her landmark solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1998. In recent years, she has largely avoided the limelight but continues to tour. Last week she played a solo show in New York City and later appeared alongside rapper Nas at radio station Hot 97's annual Summer Jam concert in New Jersey.
