Pussy Riot to publish e-book
Russian feminist punk collective Pussy Riot will publish an e-book to help the legal defense for its three members that were sentenced to two years in prison last month.
On September 21, The Feminist Press will publish Pussy Riot! A Punk Prayer for Freedom that will include contributions from Yoko Ono and members of the band Le Tigre. According to a press release:
"Pussy Riot! A Punk Prayer for Freedom collects previously unavailable material including letters from prison, closing courtroom statements by the defense attorneys, and poems in addition to the infamous punk prayer and new translations of the powerful courtroom statements. This eBook also includes galvanizing tributes from Yoko Ono, Johanna Fateman, Karen Finley, Justin Vivian Bond, Eileen Myles, and JD Samson. Proceeds from the sale of Pussy Riot! A Punk Prayer for Freedom will support the Pussy Riot legal defense team."
The trial of Yekaterina Samutsevich, Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova on charges of "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred" attracted worldwide attentio and support from activists and musicians including Madonna, Paul McCartney and Red Hot Chili Peppers. The three women were arrested in March after they performed a "punk prayer" at the altar of Moscow's main cathedral to protest the administration of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
