Citing an anonymous source, TV Line reports that the show's sole original panelist will return alongside new judge Mariah Carey and two more musicians when the Fox singing competition series begins airing again in January.

Jackson was expected to shift from a judging to a 'mentor' role as the show underwent re-tooling following the departure of Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and pop star Jennifer Lopez after last season.

Although Fox has not officially said that Jackson is still on the panel, former Idol judge Simon Cowell appeared to confirm the news, tweeting: "Just heard Randy is back on Idol. Right decision."

In the meantime, speculation continues to swirl around who will fill the remaining two slots on the judging panel. Rapper Nicki Minaj, country star Keith Urban, former Idol contestant Adam Lambert and pop star Enrique Iglesias are all rumoured to be in the running.
