Ravi Shankar memorial set for Thursday

Ravi Shankar

A public memorial to mark the passing of influential Indian musician Ravi Shankar will take place in the San Diego suburb of Encinitas, California on Thursday (December 20).

The service will take place at 10:30 a.m. local time at the Self-Realization Fellowship.

"For those who have some personal relationship with Ravi Shankar and his music, this will be an opportunity to say farewell," one of the organizers told U-T San Diego. "He was a man of the public, and the public should be able to pay their respects."

Shankar died December 11 in San Diego, California. His family said he was admitted to hospital last week, but did not fully recover from heart valve replacement surgery.

He had a lasting impact on rock and pop music thanks to his movie scores and collaboration with The Beatles, which was instrumental in helping expose global audiences to classical Indian music.

Another memorial will take place in India next month. Details will be announced soon.
