Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj discuss "Idol" feud

Feuding American Idol judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj traded barbs - and a few compliments - at a press conference organized by the Television Critics Association in Pasadena, California on Tuesday (January 8).

E! Online reports that it didn't take long for the two stars, who have been in a public spat since last fall, to star the eye-rolling and death glaring once the press event started.

After seeming to dodge repeated questions from reporters about the feud, Minaj said: "We’re professionals. Have you ever had an argument with someone you’ve worked with?"

"This was sort of one-sided," quipped Carey, smiling.

"No, it wasn’t," Minaj retorted.

However, the duo had a few nice things to say about one another, according to ONTD.

"I say nice things about Mariah all the time," Minaj said. "I tell Mariah all the time how much of a fan I am of her. She's one of my favorite artists of all time... She's shaped a generation of singers. It's kind of crazy to be on a panel with her... I feel excited to see [the contestants] see someone they look up to so much ... [and] hear her critique."

"That was obviously a very sweet thing to say," Carey said. "Nicki and I worked together very early on in her career and did a song from an album I'd done called 'Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel,' called 'Up Out My Face,' ironically... it was one of my favourite videos and songs and I did feel that she was going to go very far, and still have that feeling and am grateful for anything nice that she and anyone else have to say about me."

When a reporter asked how they resolved their differences, Minaj replied: "I put on my sex tape."

"And, there it is,” Carey replied, reportedly rolling her eyes. "The whole thing is convoluted. It's a distraction from the show and a distraction from the contestants. It's unfair to them. It shouldn't be about any of us, it should be about them. It's not supposed to be about us, it's about the contestants.

The American Idol feud made headlines last fall after a video of an apparent argument between the two during the show's audition phase went viral. The "We Belong Together" singer then called Barbara Walters and told her that she hired extra security for fear of Minaj, a claim she repeated in an interview with Walters that aired on Monday.

The new season of American Idol premieres January 16 on Fox. Producer Randy Jackson and country star Keith Urban are also on this season's judging panel.
