Amy Winehouse documentary in the works

Amy Winehouse 2

Filmmaker Asif Kapadia is working on a documentary feature about late British soul singer Amy Winehouse.

Reuters reports that the film will contain previously unseen footage of the "Back to Black" star, who died in 2011 at age 27 from alcohol poisoning.

"Amy was a once-in-a-generation talent who captured everyone's attention. She wrote and sung from the heart and everyone fell under her spell," Kapadia and producer James Gay-Rees said in a statement. "But tragically, Amy seemed to fall apart under the relentless media attention, her troubled relationships, her global success and precarious lifestyle. As a society, we celebrated her huge success, but then we were quick to judge her failings when it suited us."

Focus Features is planning to shop the film, which does not yet have a title, to buyers during the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Kapadia is best known as the director of Senna, a documentary about Brazilian auto racer Ayrton Senna.

Lenny Kravitz pulls out of Marvin Gaye biopic

Lenny Kravitz 1

Rocker Lenny Kravitz has dropped out of a feature film biopic about the life of Marvin Gaye, Deadline reports.

Instead, Law & Order actor Jesse L. Martin is now slated to star as the Motown legend in the Julien Temple-directed Sexual Healing, which is due to begin production later this month in Europe.

Shortly after producers announced Kravitz would play the lead role last year, Gaye's son, Marvin Gaye III, denounced the casting as "shameful" and said he and his family would consult lawyers in order to shut down production.

"The producers and directors of this film are very wrong and shameful," he said in an interview with TMZ. "[They're] trying to do a film about a low period in his life. They don't even know the whole story."

Gaye III, a long-time friend of Kravitz's, added: "I would hope [Lenny] doesn't have any idea that we are against this film being done."

Producers previously tapped Martin to star as Gaye in a James Gandolfini-produced version of Sexual Healing five years ago. The story focuses on the time soul singer-songwriter spent in Europe in the early 1980s trying to beat his addictions before he was fatally shot by his father in Los Angeles in 1984.

David Bowie, Iggy Pop biopic in the works

David Bowie 1

A movie about David Bowie (pictured) and Iggy Pop's collaborations in 1970s West Berlin is in development, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Tentatively entitled Lust For Life, the film will be directed by Gabriel Range (Death of a President) and based on a screenply by Robin French. It chronicles the period in the late 1970s when the two stars relocated to the divided city of West Berlin and recorded Pop's solo albums Idiot and Lust For Life and Bowie's Low.

"[Lust for Life] is not a traditional rock biopic, for no one dies at the end," producer Egoli Tossell said in a statement.

Bowie recently returned to his Berlin period in"Where Are We Now?", the lead single from his forthcoming album The Next Day. The song is full of lyrical references to the city and its music video is set in an artist's studio that appears to be based on Bowie's apartment in Berlin.

The Next Day is due out on March 12.
